Have you ever seen the Matt Damon movie “The Martian”?
If you haven’t you should give it a go. It is based on the awesome book of the same name by Andy Weir.
It tells the story of one guy who gets left alone by himself on a mission gone wrong. The plot follows both his journey and the journey of those people who are trying to save him. Personally, I think it documents excellently what it is to be a human, but that’s just me.
Anyway, I hear you asking, what the hell has this got to do with business?
Business is a lot like being stranded on Mars, really it is.
In order to survive, you have to solve one problem after another. That is all business is really a set of problems to be solved.
If you fail to solve them on Mars You Die! Same for business, if you don’t solve all your problems in a timely manner your business will die. Either because it cannot continue any more, or because someone solved a problem better than you did.
One misstep on Mars or in business and that could be the end.
If you solve enough problems over a long enough period then you Survive! That works for being stranded on Mars and for business in general.
In the film, the Matt Damon Character tells us how he is going to do this… He tells us he is going to science the SH”T out of it.
On Earth, we need to Business the SH”t out of it. That is to say, we need to be razor-sharp in fixing our problems. We need to either find, develop, borrow or for that matter steal every great solution we can to the problems at hand. If we do…. We get to live another day.
Often in business, we don’t treat our problems like life or death. Sometimes that is ok, but other times we have to join The Martian School of Business in order to survive. We have to treat our problem as if we fail to solve it, it might be our last.
